Cyndi Underwood

Cyndi Underwood joined us in October 2010 as our office manager. Please contact her for all of your administrative questions and scheduling. Cyndi has been a wonderful asset to Integrative Physical Therapy, as she possesses not only strong administrative skills and wisdom, but also a genuine spirit of kindness and encouragement.

Prior to becoming employed at Integrative Physical Therapy (IPT), Cyndi suffered from chronic low back pain due to degenerative disc disease. Traditional therapy had been ineffective and multiple nerve blocks offered only temporary relief of pain. After receiving Myofascial Release therapy (MFR) and maintaining a regular home exercise program, we are proud to say that she is now pain free and hasn’t had a nerve block in years! Cyndi is a strong testament to the healing potential of Myofascial Release. “It’s really great to be part of IPT because I have experienced first hand the benefits of MFR.”

“At first I was somewhat skeptical about the benefits of Myofascial Release.  Being a relatively new form of alternative medicine, I did not hear about the therapy from physicians or therapists, but rather by word of mouth.

“In 2003 I had a terrible bike accident causing me to fracture my pelvis in two places.  I thought everything would heal correctly by not participating in any activity for a few months.  While training for the Memphis Marathon in 2007, I found that my past injuries had created significant pelvic imbalances and leg length discrepancies, causing severe hip pain and the inability to compete in races.

“ In my 62 years, pain has been an unwelcome companion through the removal of a blood tumor by radiation as an infant; through polio at age six; through two spinal fusions for scoliosis as a teenager; through the removal of a pituitary tumor; carpal tunnel surgery; and a total hip replacement as an adult.  Over the past fifteen years, I have tried exercise, traditional physical therapy, chiropractic services, acupuncture, vitamin therapy and structural integration massage, much of which wasn’t covered by health insurance.

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis when I was 50 years old.  I knew before that time that I surely had it because of my symptoms and since both my parents, sister and brother also had it.  My grandparents, aunts and uncles on both sides of my family suffered from it as well.  I felt that I was always going to endure severe pain for the rest of my life.  I started seeing a Rheumatologist, Orthopedic Surgeon, and a Neurosurgeon.  Scans, X-rays, MRI’s were all performed along with physical exams.  I was diagnosed with a condition called spinal stenosis.

My story begins in June, 1996 with a complete hysterectomy. Fast forward 10 years to 2006 and I am being rushed to the ER by my husband due to nausea and abdominal pain. After enduring unbearable pain and waiting hours in the ER I was told by my physician that my X-ray showed a bowel obstruction. I was immediately rushed into emergency surgery where my wonderful surgeon found that I had a closed loop small bowel obstruction which required that eight inches of my small intestine be removed.

After four years of countless doctor visits, diagnostic testing, and dietary plans, a doctor told me about Integrative Physical Therapy. It seemed that no medication would help this chronic pelvic pain. This specialized therapy was my last resort.

IPT has been amazing and has given me my life back! When I began therapy in March, I was unable to sit or walk without excruciating pain. My quality of life was zero. After 3 or 4 sessions, my pain was manageable and I was able to resume most of my daily activities.
